Passer-by 'saved driver's life' in Somerset crash

An elderly woman has been pulled from a burning car by a member of the public in Somerset.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the unnamed person had saved the woman's life and described them as "heroic".

The crash involving two vehicles happened on the Mark Causeway at about 2213 BST on Saturday.

The driver, thought to be in her 80s, was treated for smoke inhalation and shock.

Firefighters from Burnham-On-Sea were sent to the scene and extinguished the fire.

Officers said the car the woman was driving left the road and went into a field, ending up on its side. It was badly damaged by the flames.

A fire service spokesman said: "If it was not for the heroic actions of a member of public, who pulled the casualty from the car fire before the arrival of the fire service, the crews would have been dealing with a fatality at this incident."
