Mayor leads funding drive for Ilminster sports centre

The mayor of a Somerset town is leading a campaign to find funding for a new sports and community centre.

Richard Beardon, mayor of Ilminster, said the £1.5m complex would have a sports hall, changing rooms and new pitches.

A business plan is being drawn up and it is hoped that a planning application will be submitted in the autumn.

Mr Beardon said fundraisers would try to secure funding from bodies such as Sport England.

There would also be a drive to raise money locally, he said.

Mr Beardon added: "This is to be a facility that will strengthen existing sports clubs in the town, and provide facilities for lots of new sports clubs for people who currently have to go some distance to other towns and places."
