Detected crimes 'up by a third' in Somerset

The number of crimes detected by police in an area of Somerset has increased by almost a third in a year.

Figures released show between April and August, 459 more criminal activity had been detected than in the same period last year, an increase of 32%.

The increase was attributed to neighbourhood policing teams concentrating on early intervention to prevent violent crimes.

Prosecutors then considered whether offenders should face a court.

An investigation into the drugs supply in Yeovil has also raised detections.

The figures relate to the Somerset East policing area which covers 656 sq miles (1,700 sq km) from Frome down to Chard.
