Prospective date set for Weston Grand Pier opening

A prospective date has been set for the opening of Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier.

A spokesman for the North Somerset attraction said it was hoped that it would open on 23 October.

The pier was expected to be completed in June, but has been hit by several setbacks.

The pavilion was destroyed by a huge fire in 2008. Owner Kerry Michael said the venue would host the final of Miss Great Britain on 4 December.

Mr Michael said earlier: "We continue to work closely with our main contractors John Sisk and Son who have today confirmed that they expect to complete their works on the pavilion by Friday 22 October.

"They have also confirmed that we will have access from today to start fitting out the building with our fixtures and fittings.

"Assuming this all goes to plan, we believe that we can open in time for the school half-term holidays starting on 23 October."

He said a full diary of events was scheduled throughout the winter season.
