Police making fewer drink-drive arrests

The number of motorists arrested on suspicion of drink-drive offences in the Avon and Somerset force area during December was 150.

More than 31,000 checks were carried out by officers during the campaign.

Chief Inspector Polly King said she was "delighted" with the number which is the lowest since 2002.

She added the constabulary was disappointed that a hardcore of motorists were still "blatantly ignoring" the drink-drive message.

Ch Insp King said she was particularly concerned that 41 of the arrested drivers were aged between 17 and 25.
