Weston's Wyvern School wins funding for academy plan
Funding of £14m has been secured from the government to turn a Weston-super-Mare school into an academy.
Wyvern Community School, in Marchfields Way, will now transform into the Hans Price Academy on 1 May.
The scheme was in doubt after the election as the coalition government examined ongoing education projects.
Weston's MP John Penrose said: "This shows that if we make our case strongly in Westminster the town's future is looking bright."
"Many people were rightly concerned about the future of the project given the state of the country's finances.
"But, thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, the project can now go ahead."
The school's transformation will see it leave local authority control and be run by educational charity, the Cabot Learning Federation.
The federation, which runs three foundations in Bristol, had hoped to secure £18m but even with lesser funding still has ambitious plans for new buildings and developments at the site.
The new academy is named after a Victorian architect who was central to the development of Weston as a resort.
