Taunton caterers face checks after 'serious' gas faults

Spot checks are being made at food establishments in Somerset after it emerged that some businesses in the county had 'serious' gas faults.

A pilot project involving Taunton Deane Council and Gas Safe Register revealed a number of faults, some serious, at four Taunton catering establishments.

Notices were issued to ensure that any immediate problems were made safe.

The council said it is making sure there is no danger to staff or customers from poor gas work.

Charlotte Dale, environmental health lead, said: "We hope our checks will be welcomed as an important safety net.

"If any serious or dangerous appliances are found then we will be requiring action to make things safe immediately."

The spot checks will make sure fittings have been made safely and correctly, and that maintenance plans are in place.
