Campaigners hoping to get the speed limit outside a primary school in Somerset reduced have welcomed the trial of an advisory 20mph limit.

At present the limit outside Berkley First C of E in Frome is 60mph but parents want this cut to 30mph.

Head teacher, Carole Brautigam, said it was a "tremendous step forward" in getting the limit permanently lowered.

The trial, which will start soon, follows meetings between the school, police and Somerset County Council.

A spokesman for the Conservative-led administration said highways officers had monitored traffic outside the school following concerns from parents.

"Further speed readings would be taken and a formal proposal be made for a permanent lower speed limit as part of the Local Transport Plan," he said.

"The safety around our schools is an issue we take very seriously."
