Former Burnham-on-Sea school to become YMCA housing

A former school and convent in Somerset is to be turned into housing for young people.

Sedgemoor councillors have agreed to give £142,500 the YMCA over the next five years for the scheme at the former La Retraite site in Burnham-on-Sea.

The cash will allow the YMCA to rent the property on a rent-to-buy basis, giving it time to raise the funds needed to purchase it.

The council says the scheme will reduce homelessness in young people.

It will also help the authority's bid for £156,000 of government funding from the Homes and Communities Agency's Empty Homes Programme.
