Weston-super-Mare sea defences used as precaution
The sea defence gates on Weston-super-Mare's seafront were closed during high tides at the weekend.
Strong onshore winds were forecast which, coupled with a tidal surge, led to the precaution being taken.
North Somerset Council said the gates were closed two hours before high tide to avoid any clash with evening events.
In October the council was criticised for not closing the flood defence barriers following high tides and strong winds.
The manager of the Old Thatched Cottage seafront restaurant, which flooded, said the damage could have been avoided if the gates had been used.
