A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at the disused Bridgwater Sports and Social Club.

More than 10 crews worked overnight to put out the blaze, which started just before 21:00 BST on Sunday.

A 45-year-old man was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police during the morning and remains in custody.

The roof of the building in Bath Road was found to contain asbestos. About half of the structure has been destroyed.

Fire investigation officer Martin Carnell said: "Thankfully there was no-one inside the building - a number of work personnel were there earlier in the day in the process of dismantling it."

The land is now owned by EDF Energy and has been earmarked for accommodation for workers if plans for the proposed Hinkley C power station are approved.
