A teenage girl filmed a man being beaten to death by her friend on her mobile phone in Weston-super-Mare, a court has heard.

Mark Roberts, 35, was attacked by a group of teenagers as he walked home alone after a night out in October.

Ryan Sheppard, 18, and the girl, 16, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are both charged with murder.

Bristol Crown Court heard Sheppard pleaded guilty but the girl denies murder.

The court heard Mr Roberts had been walking through a park, on 12 October, when he was approached by four teenagers - Ryan Sheppard, who was 17 at the time, and another boy and two girls, aged between 15 and 17.

'Ugly attack'

The jury was told Mr Roberts had walked with Sheppard for a short distance before saying he was "going home" and suggested the group did the same.

Sheppard, from Weston-super-Mare then hit Mr Roberts before one of the girls, now 16, allegedly ran up to him and punched him twice, prosecutor Adam Vaitilingam QC said.

The defendant, from Bristol, then filmed Sheppard for about 90 seconds during the "ugly and sustained attack", which involved "kicking and stamping" on Mr Roberts and "repeatedly banging his head on the pavement", Mr Vaitilingam said.

Jurors heard the girl's "use of violence was minor compared to that of Ryan Sheppard" but it was "a joint attack for which she carried joint responsibility".

He said: "Her decision to video the assault was a clear encouragement to Sheppard as he attacked Mark Roberts and makes her criminally responsible, alongside Sheppard, for his death."

The trial continues.
