Work has begun to refurbish the 150-year-old Town Bridge in Bridgwater town centre.

The £370,000 project is being described as a "major overhaul" of the structure by Somerset County Council.

As the bridge crosses the River Parrett, engineers will work around tide times in order to complete the work.

The council's Harvey Siggs said disruption to traffic and pedestrians would be "kept to a minimum".

Work is due to be completed in time for the Bridgwater Carnival in November.
