New 20mph speed limit changes under way near Bath
Work on new 20mph speed limits in two communities near Bath is under way.
The council said the restrictions in Radstock and Westfield were following residents' requests to "make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists".
Avon and Somerset Police said it backed the scheme "in general" but it would not enforce the limits, in the first instance.
Lib Dem councillor for Newbridge Caroline Roberts said public feedback had been "very positive".
"People want to see safer streets and reduced speed limits so that their communities are better places to walk, cycle, and spend time in," the cabinet member for transport said.
Ch Insp Norman Pascal said motorists had to "take responsibility" for their driving behaviour and to obey the new limits.
"Community Speed Watch volunteers, who we support, will monitor the 20mph zones," he added.
"We can use our mobile safety speed camera vans if there's evidence that the public are at risk in any particular area."
A council spokesman said the authority anticipated the speed limits to be implemented "around early November".
