A man has appeared in court by videolink charged with the attempted murder of a D-Day veteran.

Joseph Isaacs, 39, of no fixed address, is accused of attacking 96-year-old Jim Booth with a claw hammer in November.

Mr Booth spent nine days in hospital after the assault at his home in Gipsy Lane in Taunton.

Mr Isaacs, who is also charged with aggravated burglary, was remanded in custody to appear at Taunton Crown Court on 16 February.

Mr Booth was part of a top-secret team of submariners who slipped into the waters off Normandy to scout the beaches during World War Two.
