Tributes have been paid to a Sheffield councillor and former leader of the city's Labour Group who has died at the age of 66.

Ms Wilson, who represented the Manor Castle Ward, died on Monday evening. She had been suffering from cancer.

Ms Wilson recently stood down as Leader of the Labour Group in Sheffield, a position she had held since 1998.

She had been a councillor since 1992. Sheffield City Council said she was an "inspiration" and would be missed.

The authority's chief executive, John Mothersole, said: "Jan will be sorely missed. She was an inspiration to us all."

He said she had been "totally committed" to working for the city of Sheffield, for which she was awarded a CBE.

Ms Wilson's work with development agency Yorkshire Forward was also recognised, Mr Mothersole said.

She leaves two grown-up children.
