Vow to return Barnsley Gay Pride event to town centre

Barnsley's deputy mayor has pledged to return its Gay Pride festival to the town centre, after organisers had to change the location of the 2010 event.

Organisers of the event told BBC Radio Sheffield the festival, on 5 September, would now be held at the Metrodome arena because of funding issues.

Deputy mayor John Parkinson said he believed this year's event had not been planned early enough.

He said it should be held in the town centre, as it was in 2009.

Mr Parkinson said : "We will make the most of it this year, but work harder with the organisers to make sure next year is bigger, better and in Barnsley town centre."

About 2,000 people attended last year's Barnsley Gay Pride event.
