Police are appealing for witnesses to an "unprovoked attack" on a man in South Yorkshire which left him in intensive care.

The 36-year-old was walking in Nursery Road, Dinnington, at about 2200 GMT on Friday when he was hit on the head and knocked unconscious.

Police said a witness saw the victim on the ground, surrounded by a group of youths who kicked and stamped on him.

He was taken to hospital and spent two days on a ventilator in intensive care.

South Yorkshire Police said he had since been discharged and was recovering at home.

Officers believe there was no attempt to steal anything from the man and are treating it as an unprovoked attack.

Witnesses or anyone with information are being asked to contact Rotherham CID.
