A 48-year-old has been jailed indefinitely for the attempted rape of a woman at a South Yorkshire beauty spot.

David Brian Thompson, of Rawmarsh, Rotherham, was sentenced to a minimum of four years at Sheffield Crown Court.

His 50-year-old victim was assaulted on the Dearne Valley trail at Elsecar Reservoir, near Barnsley, as she walked her dog on 24 June 2010.

Thompson had denied attempted rape but was found guilty earlier this month.

The attack was featured on BBC Crimewatch last October.

'Premeditated' assault

Sentencing Thompson, Judge Michael Murphy QC told him he had carried out "a truly dreadful attack on a decent woman out walking her dog".

He said the "planned and premeditated" assault had been carried out in the open in a public place, where anyone could have stumbled across the scene at any moment.

It had blighted the woman's life, he added.

The court heard Thompson approached his victim from behind, grabbed her and sexually assaulted her.

The judge said he had serious concerns about the danger Thompson posed to women and, therefore, an indefinite sentence was appropriate for the public's protection.
