Armed police to escort cash vans in South Yorkshire

Armed police officers and the force helicopter will escort cash delivery vans across South Yorkshire in the run-up to Christmas.

The force announced it would deploy the staff to deter would-be armed thieves from targeting "high risk" vehicles.

These include those delivering cash to banks, shops, garages and betting shops.

Using force resources to provide "maximum impact" would deter professional criminals, police said.

DC Ron Day said: "The public should not be concerned if they see police officers escorting security staff.

"This operation is a deterrent to criminals and indicative of our commitment to public safety".
