'Unprovoked' attack leaves man with life-threatening head injuries

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a serious assault near a pub in Bawtry on New Year's Day.

The 35-year-old was with his girlfriend near the Penny Farthing pub when he was approached by an unknown man on Station Road at about 00:40 GMT.

He was assaulted in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack.

The offender fled the scene. Police are looking for a white man, stocky, with blond short hair, in his late 20s to early 30s.

The injured man was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary but later transferred to Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital where police said he remained in a critical condition with head injuries.
