Two children and their mother were recovering in hospital on Monday after a house fire in Rotherham in which a man died at the weekend.

The man was found downstairs in the house on Wagon Road, Greasbrough, and declared dead at the scene.

The woman, a girl aged six and a boy aged three were all found upstairs and taken from the house by firefighters.

South Yorkshire Police said they were all "stable and recovering" at Rotherham District General Hospital.

An investigation is taking place to determine the cause of the fire which started in the early hours of Saturday but it is not thought to be suspicious.

Mick Mason, from South Yorkshire fire service, described the inside of the semi-detached house as "a scene of devastation".
