Arsonists target Mexborough primary school
Firefighters in South Yorkshire say they saved a primary school from serious damage after spotting a blaze as they drove past.
Arsonists are thought to have started the fire in a play area at Mexborough Windhill Junior and Infants School.
Firefighters saw the blaze when they were called to an incident in a nearby street at 00:45 BST.
Head teacher Jenette Guy said staff worked through the night to clear the school in time for lessons.
She said one classroom had been damaged.
"We cleaned up as much as we could," Ms Guy said.
"All the children are back in school. They are very shocked."
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was started in an outside play area.
He said: "A large amount of smoke had entered the building through a window. The quick actions by the fire crews meant that the school was saved from any serious fire damage."
