Twitter comments prompt cricket club player suspensions

Nine players from a South Yorkshire cricket club have been suspended while an investigation into "inappropriate" comments on Twitter is carried out.

At a meeting, Rossington Cricket Club informed the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League (SYSCL) of its actions.

The SYSCL management committee said the club had been expelled from the league pending an appeal next week where a report will be presented.

Nobody from the Doncaster cricket club was available to comment.

Richard Tong, spokesperson for SYSCL, said a number of comments had been made about volunteer league chairman Terry Bentham.

Fixtures postponed

Mr Tong added that Rossington Cricket Club was already in a period of probation because of bad behaviour and problems at the club.

The Twitter account where the comments were linked to @Rossocricket has now been deleted.

SYSCL said it had already received letters from four players admitting their guilt and offering an apology.

Officials from the league and the cricket club are due to meet on Monday to discuss the report's findings.

Meanwhile the club's fixtures have been postponed until a final decision has been made.
