A gunman has been jailed for at least 30 years after fatally shooting a teenager with a sawn-off shotgun.

Abdi Mohammed Omar, 24, of Lopham Street, Burngreave, Sheffield, was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court of the murder of 18-year-old Deeq Ali.

Omar, jailed for life, had previously pleaded guilty to a separate offence of possession of a prohibited weapon.

Mr Ali died from a gunshot wound at The Plaza function suite, Spital Hill, Sheffield, on 30 October 2011.

Det Supt David Barraclough, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "This was a violent and senseless death. Deeq was shot and killed through no fault of his own.

"Abdi Omar turned up uninvited to a private party inside the Plaza in possession of a loaded sawn-off shotgun."

Mr Ali's family thanked the local community for assistance with the investigation, said the police.
