A man who repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend on a Sheffield street has been jailed for life.

Bulgarian national Dimitrina Borisova, 46, who lived in Hillsborough, was killed outside a row of shops on Blackstock Road on 21 February.

The mother-of-three was stabbed more than 10 times in her chest and neck.

Erhan Mehmedov, 45, of Blackstock Road, was found guilty of murder by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday and sentenced to a minimum of 28 years.

'Better life'

South Yorkshire Police said Ms Borisova had ended her relationship with Mehmedov shortly before the attack.

In a statement, her family said: "Dimitrina was a loving, kind and beautiful mother and daughter. Two children and an older son will grow up with only memories and photographs.

"The defendant has failed to ease our misery by continuing to lie and not admit to her murder.

"Dimitrina came to the United Kingdom intent on finding a better life for herself and her family, she will never be able to fulfil this ambition."

Temporary Det Supt Philip Etheridge said a number of people reported the attack and gave evidence in court.

He said: "I personally would like to pay tribute to the bravery of a number of local residents.

"The way the community of Gleadless responded to the incident and pulled together... can only be described as admirable."
