Passengers walk off burning Newcastle-under-Lyme bus

Passengers have been safely removed from a single decker bus which caught fire while being driven through Staffordshire.

Another motorist signalled to the First bus driver that his engine was on fire.

He pulled over close to the New Victoria Theatre, in Etruria Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme, at about 1240 BST.

About 20 people were taken off the bus. First said no-one was injured and that the cause of the fire was unknown.

A First spokesman said the bus was travelling from Hanley, in Stoke-on-Trent, towards Newcastle-Under-Lyme when the fire began.

He said: "This is an extremely rare incident. It is a one-off incident that can happen to anyone at any time.

"Buses are as safe a mode of transport as anything else, if not safer."
