Canal boats at Rugeley targeted by thieves

Canal barges moored in Staffordshire have been targeted by burglars who used a boat to get aboard.

Twelve narrow boats moored on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Rugeley were broken into on Tuesday.

Police said thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to the boats and items such as fishing equipment, cameras, and televisions stolen.

No-one was in the boats, moored behind the Ash Tree pub, off Armitage Road, at the time of the thefts.

Police said the thieves got onto the narrowboats from the canal, using a boat themselves.

They then took the property to a vehicle nearby and drove away.
