Sledgehammers used in Shelton jewellers armed raid

Men armed with sledgehammers and a suspected firearm have raided a jewellery store in Staffordshire.

Three men entered Eastern Jewellers in College Road, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, at about 1600 BST on Tuesday and began smashing cases.

Witnesses reported that one of the men appeared to be carrying a firearm but it was not used, police said.

The men threatened store staff and stole a quantity of gold, then left in a black VW Golf.

The vehicle was driven by a fourth man and was later found abandoned in an alleyway.

Det Insp Rob Thompson, from Staffordshire Police, said "Thankfully no one has been injured in this incident and although shaken the staff at the shop have been able to give us a detailed account of what happened. We are also reviewing CCTV from the shop and surrounding area which will help our enquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
