Stoke-on-Trent has the highest rate of deaths from smoking-related illnesses in the West Midlands region, figures have revealed.

Between 2006 and 2008 more than 290 people in every 100,000 aged 35 and over died because of smoking.

The Department of Health commissioned research, which was led by the London Health Observatory.

This was on behalf of the Association of Public Health Observatories, which represents 12 public health groups.
