Two police constables have been taken to hospital after helping to rescue a woman and child from a house fire.

A pan caught fire just before 0400 BST in Baskeyfield Place, Chell Heath, Stoke-on-Trent.

Pcs Kevin Perry and Matthew Leigh were on patrol nearby and entered the house through a side door, seconds before the fire crew arrived.

Both the occupants and police needed treatment after breathing in smoke. The officers then finished their shift.

Ch Insp Jeff Moore, of Staffordshire Police, said "Our two officers, Pc Kevin Perry and Pc Matthew Leigh, acted immediately and bravely to help members of our community in great distress.

"It was a very difficult and challenging situation and all emergency services worked closely together to rescue this mother and child."

The mother and child have since been released from hospital.
