A man has died following a car crash in Staffordshire.

Emergency crews were called to the A518, near Uttoxeter, shortly after 0540 GMT on Wednesday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a car and a van had collided and the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Staffordshire Police said they have arrested the driver of the van in connection with the crash and he is currently in police custody.

The ambulance service spokeswoman said fire crews helped free the man who died from his car.

"Once freed resuscitation attempts were carried out," she said.

"Unfortunately despite the best efforts of ambulance personnel on scene nothing could be done to save the man."

Staffordshire Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

A police spokesman said the vehicles involved were a white Transit van and a Vauxhall Vectra car.
