Evacuations over gas lorry crash in Essington

About 20 people were evacuated from their homes after a lorry carrying gas cylinders overturned in a collision with a van in Staffordshire.

The 38-tonne HGV was carrying oxyacetylene tanks and an unknown load at the time of the incident on Warstone Road in Essington.

An exclusion zone was set up due to the "unpredictable" nature of the gas, police said.

The van driver had cuts and bruises and smashed a window to escape.

Residents are now returning to their homes, fire crews said.

The road, close to the junction with the M54 and M6 Toll motorways, was closed while police and fire crews dealt with the incident which happened about 0700 BST.

A police helicopter used a thermal imaging camera to check for any stray cylinders.

The road will reopen once the vehicles have been recovered, police said.
