Staffordshire campaign targets reckless bikers

A campaign targeting any bikers who ride recklessly in Staffordshire has started.

Motorcyclists account for about 19% of those killed or seriously injured in the county and represent 1% of all road traffic, campaign organisers said.

Eight bikers died in Staffordshire in 2010 with a further 41 being seriously injured and 275 had minor injuries.

Police in cars, on bikes and from the air operations unit have been across the county.

Staffordshire County Council and police have joined forces, through the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, to start the first phase of Operation Octane 2011.

The partnership also includes Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
