A school in Stoke-on-Trent has closed for the day as a tribute to a 12-year-old pupil who was killed by a bus.

Courtney Holdcroft, of Larch Grove, Blurton, was hit as she crossed the road near Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy in Beaconsfield Drive, Blurton.

The accident was on Monday and the school closed on Tuesday, after assemblies, as a mark of respect.

Academy principal Mark Stanyer said Courtney was a lovely girl who had shown great promise in music.

"We were all very proud of her," he said.

Police said Courtney was crossing from the school side of the road when the collision happened and the bus was travelling down Beaconsfield Drive, on the other side of the road.
