Stoke driveway hire 'solution' to parking congestion

A residents' group in Stoke-on-Trent is asking local people if they would rent out their driveways to help solve on-street parking congestion.

Hartshill and Harpfields Residents Association said people using a nearby hospital often park in local streets.

Chairman Barbara Andrew said: "The simple idea is to match up people who are looking for a regular parking space with people who have got one to offer."

It will put the idea to 3,000 residents in its next newsletter.

Resident Joanne Lockley said the streets were often very congested on weekdays.

She said: "You double park and that's dangerous.... you literally can't see to get out of your drive."

Ms Andrew said they want to gauge how many people in the area have a driveway or garage that is not used in the day which they would be happy to rent out.

"It's like car journey sharing or a person with a large garden letting it to somebody who wants to grow vegetables," she said.

In a statement, the University Hospital of North Staffordshire said it welcomed any "innovative suggestions" that could reduce the demand for parking.
