Stoke-on-Trent furniture firm Gilberts to be liquidated

A family-run furniture firm in Stoke-on-Trent will shut down next week with the loss of 15 jobs, liquidators said.

The economic downturn and the reduction in the number of house sales had caused the liquidation of Gilberts, Begbies Traynor claimed.

The firm had a showroom in Shelton New Road and a Fenton Industrial Estate warehouse.

Liquidators said a creditors meeting would be held on 5 April to put Gilberts into voluntary liquidation.

Bob Young, from Begbies Traynor, said it was "sad" that a "long-established furniture retailer" had gone into liquidation.

He said: "It has been caused by the decline in the general economic market and specifically the reduction in the number of house sales.

"People often buy a new suite when they move house."

Mr Young said customers who paid deposits for furniture using credit cards and some debit card users should be able to claim their money back.

Anyone who paid cash would join the list of creditors, he said.
