A taxi driver may hold "vital information" over a fatal stabbing in Stoke-on-Trent, say police.

Dalbagh Singh Malhi, 29, from Burslem, died in hospital following an incident in Wellfield Road, Bentilee, on 13 May.

Lee Shaw, 33, from Smallthorne, has been charged with his murder and is remanded in custody.

Police said they want to speak to a male taxi driver who picked up Mr Shaw and two females after dropping off a woman between 12:45 BST and 01:45 BST.

The woman, who was with a group of people, was dropped off in the Dawlish Drive and Dividy Road area.

Ch Insp Mark Dean said: "An investigation to determine the exact circumstances of what happened in Wellfield Road in the early hours of Sunday 13 May is ongoing.

"The driver may not realise that what he could have seen or heard may be extremely important to the investigation. I would encourage him to come forward."

Mr Shaw and the two females were dropped off in the Northwood area, police said.

The taxi is believed to be silver and was not pre-booked.
