Two cars have been struck by falling concrete from a bridge over the M6.

Debris struck both vehicles at about 05:20 BST, shattering one car's windscreen, Cheshire Police said.

One driver was taken to hospital as a precaution while the other was uninjured.

The southbound carriageway near Sandbach was closed between junctions 18 and 16 while inspectors assessed the safety of the bridge. It has since reopened but there are long delays.

Police said there was "significant traffic congestion" in the area and advised people travelling to the RHS Tatton Park flower show, near Knutsford, to allow extra time for their journey.

The Highways Agency will now launch an inquiry to determine what caused pieces of concrete from the bridge to come loose.
