A man has been charged as part of a murder inquiry into the death of a jeweller in Suffolk.

The unemployed 34-year-old is due to appear before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds later to face a charge of conspiracy to commit burglary.

The body of Peter Avis, 66, was found at his home above the Collis & Son shop in Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, on Friday morning.

Another man, aged 30, is being held on suspicion of murder.

Police have until Thursday to question the man after being granted more time by magistrates.

Three men, aged 18, 26 and 34, and a 27-year-old woman have been released on bail after being held for questioning as part of the inquiry.

Post-mortem tests showed Mr Avis died of stab wounds.

In a statement, his family described him as "rather eccentric but a gentle, old-fashioned and private man" who was "perhaps extremely vulnerable".
