A fire that destroyed a disused school in Suffolk is being treated as suspicious.

Crews were called to the empty Castle Hill Middle School in Haverhill at 22:00 BST on Sunday after calls from local residents.

Smoke from the blaze spread across the area and residents were advised to stay indoors and close windows.

Suffolk Police made an appeal for anyone with information about the fire to contact them.

A police spokesman said: "The structure of the building is not currently stable enough for fire officers to carry out a full examination into the cause of the fire but following initial investigations it is being deemed as suspicious.

"Officers are also urging members of the public to stay away from the site as it is unsafe and anyone entering would be putting themselves at risk."
