A former security guard charged with stealing £1m from a security van in Suffolk in 1993 has been granted public money to help pay his legal costs.

Eddie Maher, 57, who gave his address as Wannock Lane, Eastbourne, was deported from the US on 10 July.

Ipswich Magistrates' Court heard Mr Maher's legal aid bid was accepted on Monday.

He has been charged with the theft of £1,172,500 from Felixstowe in January 1993.

Mr Maher, originally from South Woodham Ferrers, in Essex, appeared in court via video link and will return to the court on 7 August.

He was arrested in Ozark, Missouri, in February.
