Security is to be improved at a playing field where a toddler was hit by a van and later died.

Up to 40 travellers' caravans have been based on the land at Lovetofts Drive in Ipswich since 18 July.

The borough council said the park had been secured by a padlocked gate but extra security measures would now be taken as the travellers have left.

A 20-month-old boy died after being hit by a van last Tuesday. A 37-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested.

He is due to answer police bail on 12 October.

Ipswich Borough Council said it had received "dozens" of complaints from local residents about the travellers' presence and litter on the playing field.

A spokesperson said the travellers had left of their own accord.
