Oakwood School inquiry: Stowmarket man charged with sex offences

A 74-year-old man has been charged with sexual offences alleged to have taken place at a Suffolk boarding school.

It follows a police inquiry into claims by former pupils of Oakwood School in Stowmarket, which was run by Suffolk County Council from 1974 until it closed in 2000.

Eric De Smith, of Danes Close in the town, has been charged with gross indecency and indecent assault.

He is due to appear before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds on 1 October.

Oakwood was a state boarding school for children with behavioural problems.
