Kingswood man spends £2,000 in fake Persian rugs scam

A man is being sought by police in Surrey after an 87-year-old man was conned into handing over more than £2,000 for four fake Persian rugs.

The victim, from Kingswood, was rung by a man claiming to be a relation of someone he used to know.

The suspect then turned up at his home, demanding £5,000 for the rugs, before accepting cash and a cheque for £2,000.

The man cancelled the cheque the next day, and subsequently found out the rugs were worth about £150 in total.

Police said the suspect was described as Middle Eastern in appearance, in his early 40s, about 5ft 7in tall and of slim build.

He had dark hair, was clean shaven, was wearing a smart suit and had a Middle Eastern accent.
