Man hit with hammer at barbecue event in Surrey park

A man from Croydon was hit on the head with a hammer after a fight between two groups in a Surrey park.

Surrey Police said the man had been taking part in a team-building barbecue when eight other people approached the group in Red House Gardens, Leatherhead, on Sunday.

The second group left after an initial fight but a teenager later returned and hit a 26-year-old with a hammer.

The man was treated at Epsom General Hospital for a cut to his head.

Detectives said the suspect was described as white, of slim build, approximately 5ft 10in tall and aged between 16 and 18 with dark cropped hair.

Warm evening

He was wearing jeans and a light coloured T-shirt.

Det Con Nicola Finlayson said: "I cannot stress how seriously we are viewing this incident. This type of assault is totally unacceptable and we simply will not tolerate violence of this kind.

"It was a very warm evening on Sunday night and I am sure there would have been lots of people enjoying the late sun in the recreation park.

"It is vital we trace everyone who was there as they may have vital information which will further my investigation."
