Police said they were shocked by the scale of the fraud

Police have released a picture of a man they want to speak to after an elderly woman in Surrey was conned out of her life savings.

The 84-year-old, from Fetcham, near Leatherhead, handed over nearly £200,000 to a series of conmen.

She was first contacted in September 2009 by a man who claimed her roof needed repairing.

Police said a series of fraudsters extracted a total of £198,835 from the woman over a period of nine months.

The first man, who called himself Mr Matthews, offered to carry out the roof repairs. The victim handed over money but it is not known what work was done.

She also handed money over to a man calling himself Mr Sparrow who claimed he was from an insurance company overseeing the work.

Det Sgt Oana King said: "Everyone was shocked and appalled by the scale of this fraud which stripped an elderly woman of her life savings."
