Man, 26, arrested after hammer attack in Surrey park

A man has been arrested over a hammer attack in a Surrey park.

The victim had been taking part in a team-building barbecue when eight other people approached the group and a fight started in Red House Gardens, Leatherhead, in July.

The second group soon left but a man later returned and hit a sales assistant with a hammer.

Surrey Police said a 26-year-old local man had been questioned by detectives and released on bail.

The victim, also a man aged 26, was treated at Epsom General Hospital for a cut to his head.

Det Con Nicola Finlayson said: "At the time of this offence Surrey Police promised the community we would take robust action against the person responsible for this violent assault.

"This was a most uncommon assault and I hope the Leatherhead community is reassured by this latest development.

"We remain committed to establishing the facts that led up to this assault and will work hard to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice."
