Claygate murder suspect drove to Beachy Head cliffs

A woman arrested on suspicion of bludgeoning a man to death in Surrey on Sunday was talked out of throwing herself off cliffs in Sussex.

Police said the 56-year-old had driven from her Claygate home to Beachy Head where officers spent three hours persuading her to leave the cliff edge.

Officers discovered the body of a man in his 60s at a large detached house in Claygate just after 1300 BST on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination found he died of "severe blunt trauma" head injuries.

'Welfare assessment'

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Officers had gone to the area after a report that the woman might be making her way there, and found her car parked nearby.

"She was spotted at the cliff edge just before 1pm and was brought to safety shortly after 4pm.

"The woman, who was unhurt, was detained for a welfare assessment.

"Surrey police officers attended Eastbourne custody centre later in the day and arrested her on suspicion of murder in that force area."

Police said the woman remains in police custody and formal identification of the victim is expected on Tuesday.
