'Smash and grab' raid at BP petrol station in Alfold

A petrol station burglar took cigarettes worth £6,000 and caused damage put at £2,000 in what police described as a "smash and grab" raid.

Officers said the thief, wearing a balaclava and gloves, broke into the BP station on the A281 Horsham Road, Alfold, at about 2140 BST on Tuesday.

The suspect forced open a shutter and security screens to reach the stock.

Surrey Police said a red hatchback drove on to the forecourt at the time and the driver could be a witness.

Det Con Craig Giles said: "Whilst the burglary was taking place, a red hatchback was seen to drive into the service station and then drove straight out again.

"I would urge the driver to call officers as they may have an important snippet or detail which could help bring this offender to justice."
